Paul Moscatt

Born:  Brooklyn, New York, 1931

Though I am primarily a figurative artist, I regard landscape as a very important part of my work. My first significant landscape experience was at Cooper Union's Green Camp, NJ in 1957. In 1961 I attended Yale/Norfolk Summer Art School; fellow students included Chuck Close, Brice Marden and Vija Celmins. Since retirement I have been able to devote equal time to my involvement with landscape and the figure and was part of the Trafford and Isabel Klotz Artist Residencies in Rochefort-en-Terre, Brittany France in 2005 and in 2007.

Though I have had a private figure painting group for some 30 years, since retirement I have added Plein Air Landscape group - most members are represented in this exhibition.

Looking to nature for inspiration in my art has been a constant revelation. The mystery and variation in nature’s design of plants and animals is especially engrossing. For 13 years I worked with handmade paper and abstract images, drawing on psychology, mythology and literature for ideas and inspiration. With En Plein Air painting I am trying to utilize some of my previous experiences with abstraction. It is always a challenge to see what happens on canvas, both in my art and other people’s approaches.

A Zen master said: “Words are lies.”

My paintings are the most direct and honest expression of my spirit. I have been a long time student and teacher of Tai Chi – the ancient Chinese martial art. Before beginning to paint, I always did Tai Chi. If everything is going well, the meditative state continues into the expression of the painting. I was born in Fargo, North Dakota and first painted with Arthur Jones in Dorset, Vermont. After a long break, I have returned to painting in the last few years. Recently have been participating in Paul Moscatt’s En Plein Air Group.

After working for 30 years in mental health policy and management for the state of Maryland, Lissa Abrams retired in July 2011. Throughout her career she painted occasionally, while yearning to devote more time to her love of painting. Retirement has afforded Lissa the opportunity to capture the beauty of Maryland’s scenery on canvas. Lissa paints outdoors in Baltimore City, on the eastern and western shores, throughout Maryland’s beautiful countryside, and other interesting places. When she paints, she enjoys capturing the light at various times of the day through the use of bold colors. “There is nothing more exciting than capturing the beauty of nature on canvas.” Oil paints are her preferred medium.
